The Art of Calligraphy

On Thursday 27th of August we had one of our class mates' mum come in to teach us Calligraphy. Calligraphy originated in the Stone Age! In Greek, Calligraphy means beautiful (kallos) writing (graphe). We learnt two basic lines then we put them together. Frills were added and a large tail shaped like a C. Some letters were harder than others. Capitals have more detail, but there are lower case letters as well. We wrote our names and other words of encouragement. We were only taught one style, even though there are many styles. It was challenging, but so much fun! We can use this art of writing when we make cards too. Thank you so much Mrs B for sharing this skill with us.

Mathematics Learning

Today we used tangrams (a Chinese geometrical puzzle consisting of a square cut into seven pieces which can be arranged to make various 2d-shapes) to design our own patterns. It was a beautiful and colourful display!

We read a book 'Counting on Frank' in Mathematics and came up with our own problems to solve.

Fraction learning is a lot of fun! We explored inside and outside of the classroom and took photos of fractions around us. See if you can spot what the fraction is!

We made some rockets out of soda P.E.T bottles, paper and tape. First we got a bottle and cut it into thirds. Then we got a another bottle and we put the other bottle that we cut and put it on the bottom of the other bottle. Then we taped the nose cone on.Then we put the the center of the cut bottle on the top. Then we cut some fins. then taped them on.

Here is a video of us launching our rockets.

SWEET MAKING

We had fun making peppermint creams, strawberry creams, lemon creams and blueberry creams.

Ingredients to make about 20 sweets

  • 225g icing sugar
  • a few drops of water
  • a few drops of flavouring
  • a few drops of food colouring

Instructions

  1. Sift the icing sugar into a bowl and then stir in a little water to make a paste.
  2. Add a few drops of flavouring and colouring and knead well. The mixture should be thick and pliable. If you need to, add a little more icing sugar.
  3. Place the paste on baking paper, cover with another piece and roll out.
  4. Stamp out into rounds of about 2cm in diameter and about 1/2cm thick.
  5. Press each sweet with the back of a fork to give it a fancy look.
  6. Leave for at least an hour to dry.
  7. Eat and enjoy!
